Introduction

Motmot partnered with Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) to inspect a newly installed section of 8-inch ductile iron water main in the City of Detroit. The objective was to provide clear visibility and provide a Risk Assessment report for the new section of pipe prior to its connection to the live distribution system.

Project Scope

Using our Autonomous Underwater Robot (AUR), the team performed a tethered, in-pipe run to document interior conditions and demonstrate how Motmot’s technology can be deployed during pre-connection or pre-commissioning stages of a pipeline project. This pilot inspection allowed us to capture video, acoustic, and temperature data. Motmot delivered a Risk Assessment Report that provided DWSD with early insight into system readiness before the water main was brought online. This pilot inspection was our first deployment with a municipality and was designed to show Motmot’s inspection workflow and field operations. Twelve DWSD staff members joined us on-site and were able to gain familiarity with Motmot's capabilities and inspection methodologies.
