Case study

Sault Ste. Marie, MI

Motmot partnered with OHM Advisors and the City of Sault Ste. Marie to perform an interior inspection of a 36-inch cast iron raw water line inlet constructed in 1902. This inlet delivers raw water from Lake Superior to the city’s treatment plant and had never been inspected internally using modern high-resolution tools. The goal of this pilot deployment was to document interior conditions and establish the first visual and sensor-based record for this century-old asset.

Project Scope

Using Motmot’s tethered Autonomous Underwater Robot (AUR), the team conducted a controlled in-pipe inspection. The AUR collected high-resolution video, still imagery, acoustic recordings, temperature measurements, and pressure data. This pilot marks the first time internal video has been captured inside this pipeline, giving the city and OHM Advisors valuable baseline information for ongoing planning. The team is working to support the continuation of this project and planning the logistics for a return inspection to capture further data for a complete-inspection analysis.
